For a long time we have been searching for that elusive hotel, the one that offers exceptional hospitality, perfect location stunning views and that special feeling of finding a home away from home. With the Munro Boutique Hotel we may just have found it.
Secluded off St. Patricks Street (they must have known we were coming ) in the Houghton area of Johannesburg the Munro boutique hotel commands a panoramic view over the “City of Gold”.
With only five Guest Suites and a 5 Star rating we knew that this accommodation would be special. A victorian conservatory with retractable roof sits in the centre of the accommodation creating an urban jungle feel. The conservatory houses a Japanese style garden. We would say it brought us back to a different era but what they have created at the Munro is timeless.
We discovered we would be the only guests having exclusive access to the property as our booking coincided in between two events for the hotel. This was to be our last night in Johannesburg and we couldn’t have got a better send off.
We were welcomed by our “pugilicous” host, Kiera, complete with a sparkling necklace. To our delight we were informed by the manager that we would be given an upgrade. We were graciously escorted to the Master Suite. What lay before us was beyond our wildest expectations. Suite was an understatement! Our lodgings consisted of main bedroom, dining room, private terrace, walk in wardrobe and a stunning bathroom complete with sauna , steam room and Jacuzzi. Partial to the saunas of mainland Europe we were in our element!
What drew us initially to the Munro was the infinity pool, cleverly designed by its owner. You can also see the care and dedication curated in this masterpiece of a property. The pool is the focal point for us. As you enter the reception your eye is immediately drawn down the spacious hallway and out onto the terrace where the pool sits invitingly.
Stunning surroundings aside, what made this hotel a dream stay for us was the attention given to us by the staff and the fact that it didn’t feel like a hotel at all. The owners attention to detail and the personal touch of checking in with his guests enamoured us to the property even more.
We can see why this palatial mansion is host to exclusive events and can be hired privately . We learned it is particularly sought after for media events.
A couples haven we dined al Fresca on the Terrace for our evening meal . The most romantic setting and the perfect way to spend our last night on the African continent. We will definitely be paying the Munro another visit on our return to South Africa. All other places we will visit, will now be benchmarked against this thoroughly unique home.
