Hello, beautiful people!!
I am literally writing this post while traveling to Northern Ireland’s exquisite lakeside resort, Finn Lough. After spending the last couple of minutes replying to comments, I realised how many questions I get asking about starting a travel blog. I thought I’d impart a little wisdom on a blog post and share it with ye’all.
Here is my step by step guide which, hopefully, will help you get started on blogging. Enjoy.
I AM STARTING A BLOG, MOM!
STEP 1: Just start!!
Seriously!! The hardest part is to start and the truth is, every blogger you follow has started somewhere. You’ll soon realise that once you get started, you’ll find a style that matches your personality. Stay true to yourself, think carefully of a name for your blog and start typing. No-one expects your blog to be as perfect as those that have been around since 2008.
One of the best things I have ever done, was setting up this site. Over the past 2 years, I have traveled more than ever, seen epic places, met fantastic souls and tasted weird and wonderful flavours. A gypsy soul’s dream! Before starting Flight O’Fancee (other than my final year thesis), I had NO writing experience, NO idea how to run a website and had never heard of WordPress.
This leads me to my top recommendation: WordPress!
What makes a good blog name?
Keep it classy, unique, easily searchable & available as a domain name.
STEP 2: Set up hosting for your blog.
The second thing I have done, was to consider a good quality hosting site for my website (blog). I was looking for a space that is inexpensive, safe with high security, no set-up fees and flexibility to cancel or move to another host site if it doesn’t work out.
Hostpapa is the hosting site I can rant and rave about. The team is excellent, super responsive on their chat feature and trouble shoot technical issues suuuuper quick. I cannot recommend this hosting site enough.
Bonus: With Hostpapa, you get:
- FREE setup & domain registration, marketing tools, email address and website builder
- 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee† – No risk
What is hosting?
Essentially, hosting is the home for your website, a space for your site to live in. Without a host, your blog cannot exist.
After choosing a host site, select a domain name (your website address, like: flightofancee).
STEP 3: Install WordPress
After signing up for hosting, it’s time to install WordPress. WordPress also offer a ‘hosting’ service – feel free to explore the options.
You can select an existing blog template for your website or you might want something a little more fancy, like I did. This part is so incredibly easy. Just head over to Etsy to look at some very affordable yet beautiful blog templates for WordPress. I have had my template for 2 years and I love it. The best part is I can play around and it was not something that I spent a fortune on.
STEP 4: Explore your blog’s dashboard & connect
The best way to learn, is to explore and play around. You will find your feet. My blog template came with a step by step guide. Again, this was very easy to follow and exciting to customise.
Personally, once I had everything installed and written a couple of posts, I then started to share it across my social media channels. I converted my Instagram account to my blog and set up a Facebook page.
It is a fantastic idea to set up an account on Bloglovin’ to get discovered and readers can follow your updated posts.Follow my blog with Bloglovin
STEP 5: Install 5 useful plugins
- Akismet: Looks after unwanted spam by filtering and deleting it.
- Yoast SEO: analyses your rankings and visibility in Google.
- Contact form 7: This will connect your email to your contact page.
- Instagram Feed: This will link your Instagram account to your blog.
- Google Site Kit: This will give you statistics in which posts do very well and what your audience search that lead them to your blog posts.
A final note
Writing a blog is very hard work, it takes motivation and serious commitment. Coming up with fresh ideas, unique photographing, editing, writing, scheduling and building a following, is not an easy feat. It takes a long time. So, if you want to become a blogger, persevere!
I hope that this post was useful and answered a few questions. If you have any questions you’d like to ask then definitely email me or leave me a comment and I’ll get back to you ASAP!
